Orlando area

Red Hot & Boom

One of Central Florida's largest Independence Day celebrations and fireworks shows is expected to bring 150,000 to Altamonte Springs on Sunday. Live musical performances and a variety of food vendors kick things off at 4 p.m., with festivities capping off with a huge synchronized fireworks show just before 11 p.m. Cranes Roost Park, where the event takes place, recently reopened after months of renovation. Coke Zero 400

Race fans, pack your cooler and folding chair for Saturday's nighttime NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. The race may be the main event, but other events include a concert by country music duo Montgomery Gentry and an appearance and tribute to three living Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Cost: From $60 for stadium, from $55 for infield general seating. When: Fan events Friday-Saturday, with the race starting at 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

One Heart, One Pulse Motorcycle Ride

A six-hour group motorcycle ride to raise money for victims and families of the Pulse shooting takes off from EagleRider Motorcycles in Orlando on Saturday. Cost: $10 minimum donation. When: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Where: 1150 Jetport Drive. Call 407-438-4055 for information.

Tampa Bay area

Polar Beach Party at MOSI

This event runs all holiday weekend and July 9-10 starting at 10 a.m. The air-conditioned beach party will feature bounce houses, a simulated shore line and real falling snow. When: Starts Saturday. Cost: $26.95, $25.95 seniors, $20.95 ages 3-12, ages 2 and younger free.

Kiwanis Midnight Run

For the grownups who enjoy getting outdoors and running, this promises to be one of the weekend’s prettier planned outings. The run starts after midnight Sunday – the 10K run follows Causeway Boulevard in Dunedin. According to organizers, the course is flat and lit by more than 700 luminarias. The event also features two shorter runs. Cost: $8 - $45.

Daddy Dawgs Hot Dog Eating Contest

You may want to treat yourself to this one after the Midnight Run. Safety Harbor hot-dog-and-ice-cream eatery Daddy Dawgs challenges all takers to find out how many hot dogs they can consume in 10 minutes. The winner will go home with a 3-gallon tub of ice cream. Potential contestants should RSVP on the restaurant’s Facebook page prior to Sunday. When: 1 p.m. Sunday. Where: Daddy Dawgs, 3101 S.R. 580, Unit E.

Fourth of July at the History Center

Enjoy costumed reenactors as they share displays of artifacts, uniforms, crafts and music representing several eras of American military history during extended center hours. Where: 801 Old Water St., Tampa. When: Monday. Cost: $5.
