Caleb Spencer, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Central Florida, acted just like many other millennials on Monday during the first day of the Republican National Convention.

  • Caleb Spencer is a senior at the University of Central Florida
  • He's been tasked to Snapchat on the username UCFGOP
  • Spencer said he wants to see party unity this week

He was taking "selfies" for Snapchat, interacting on social media and soaking up the spectacle unfolding inside Quicken Loans Arena.

There's a slight difference, though: Spencer is an alternate delegate. In fact, the 22-year-old said that as far as he knows, he's the only college-aged delegate or alternate delegate in the Florida delegation.

"It's pretty cool," Spencer said of his first few hours inside "The Q." He said he's been sitting up in the normal seats most of the day, but he has been allowed down on the floor a few times. "Really, we're just walking around hob-nobbing."

When Spencer isn't walking around and interacting with other delegates and politicians, he's busy taking videos and pictures for UCF's College Republicans' Snapchat account, UCFGOP.

"I'm just keeping them up to date on what it's like to be a convention delegate/alternate," he said from Freedom Plaza, which is an outside space situated between The Q and Progressive Field. "Anyone can follow. I've been posting a lot of videos to gain an actual perspective from the member of the Florida delegation."

Spencer said he hopes to see party unity over the next couple of days.

"We understand that some people are not satisfied, per se, with Mr. Trump's nomination, but the simple fact of the matter is he is the nominee. The way our political system works, we are not a direct democracy, we are an indirect democracy."

Spencer also said he wants to see how the Republican National Committee gets organized to involve millennials.

But how important is the role of social media in getting the younger vote?

"It's pretty big, honestly, especially if you’re on the average college campus. A lot of the kids communicate through Snapchat, Twitter."

Spencer was born in Pine Hills and lives in Apopka. The convention is unlike anything he's seen before.

"Massive, amazing, organized," he said. "It really is very well organized. I've been rather impressed. Unified."

Just check his Snaps. You'll see what it really looks like inside The Q.
