According to Florida election officials, an amendment that could allow formerly convicted felons to vote has gathered almost 71,000 signatures from registered voters. That means it will be reviewed by Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Florida Supreme Court.

Florida's constitution bars convicted felons from voting unless they file a petition with a clemency board. However, the amendment would allow most of them to have their voting rights automatically restored after serving their prison sentence and probation.

Amendment supporters hope to put it on the 2018 ballot.
