Surrounded by longtime colleagues and family, Melbourne Fire Department's first black female firefighter called it a career Friday.
- Marjorie Durant has been with Melbourne Fire since 1987
- She was Melbourne's 1st black female firefighter
- Larry Pearson also retired; he started same day as Durant
Marjorie Durant retired at a ceremony after three decades of service fighting fires and working as a paramedic.
She's received several awards as a member of the Melbourne Fire Department, including firefighter of the year, a Life Saving Award and numerous commendations.
Her final day on the job wasn't a quiet one.
"We ran four calls this morning, including a bus accident. And it just let me know that I'm going to miss my job," Durant said.
Her son, a fellow MFD firefighter, presented her with a plaque.
Also retiring Friday was Larry Pearson, who started the same day as Durant in 1987.
