Police have arrested a man they say stole a car and sped through a Melbourne neighborhood before crashing.

The incident happened at 8 a.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Main Street.

A woman reported that her orange Chevy SUV was stolen from her driveway, police said.

At about 9:20 a.m., Melbourne officers spotted the suspect driving eastbound on Florida Avenue and attempted to stop him. However, the man, identified as 20-year-old Jevon Williams, fled to a dead end on Florida Avenue before crashing the vehicle in a wooded area.

Officers, with the help of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, searched the wooded area for Williams.

He was later taken into custody and faces charges of grand theft auto, fleeing and attempting to elude and resisting.
