  • Former President Bush in hospital since Wednesday
  • Now breathing on his own
  • Barbara Bush also improving

The 41st president of the United States is said to be breathing on his own, with minimum need for oxygen and is in stable condition.

Doctors are optimistic about the Mr. Bush's health and believe he will be discharged from the ICU in the next few days.

He was admitted into the hospital Wednesday because of shortness of breath and pneumonia. Doctors performed a procedure to clear his airways, which required him to be put on oxygen.

Barbara Bush is also said to be improving. The former first lady joined her husband to watch the inauguration, along with son Neil and his daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Bush has been diagnosed with bronchitis, and doctors plan on keeping her in the hospital over the weekend, most likely.
