A former Volusia County corrections officer is accused of having a sexual relationship with an inmate, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

  • Ex-corrections officer reportedly admitted to relationship with inmate
  • Investigators say Megan Lynch would come in on her days off to see the inmate
  • An internal and criminal investigation was launched

Megan Lynch, 27, was arrested Thursday night on charges of sexual misconduct, which is a third-degree felony.

Investigators say Lynch resigned from the Volusia County Correctional Facility in June 2016 following accusations.

Lynch and the 26-year-old inmate reportedly admitted to having a relationship. The inmate said it was consensual. Investigators say other inmates were used to pass notes between Lynch and the inmate; at least one was used as a lookout.

Volusia County authorities also said that Lynch arranged to have the inmate assigned to her as a trustee. An internal investigation was launched after the relationship was reported by another inmate.

According to investigators, Lynch was witnessed watching the inmate taking a shower. She reportedly came in on her off days to see the inmate.

In October, the Sheriff's Office was brought in to conduct a criminal investigation. The agency reviewed hundreds of phone calls that the inmate made to Lynch. In one recording, Lynch says, "I understand that somewhere we crossed the line."

The inmate said the relationship was consensual, according to authorities.

However, any sexual contact between a detention facility employee and an inmate is considered a criminal offense under Florida law.

Lynch was arrested at a residence in Port Orange. She was booked into the Flagler County Detention Facility on a $10,000 bond.
