The Humane Society of Marion County received three dogs this week that were rescued from a dog meat farm in Wonju, South Korea.

On Thursday, shelter officials welcomed Julius, Ike and Jose.

Lauren Faw, the shelter's canine transports coordinator, said the dogs flew from Korea to San Francisco to Orlando. From there, there they drove the dogs to Marion County.

A total of 200 dogs were rescued and taken to shelters in the United Kingdom, Canada and the U.S., including six Florida shelters.

This is the first time The Humane Society of Marion County has taken dogs from the meat trade — a practice the rescue group says needs to stop.

"The South Korean government is working with the Humane Society of the United States to help close this down. We're real hopeful that the meat trade will end in Korea very shortly," said Bruce Fishalow, the executive director of The Humane Society of Marion County.

Shelter officials said Julius, Ike and Jose are not socialized with humans, so they plan to partner the dogs with inmates that teach them basic obedience and house manners.

The dogs will be available for adoption in about three months, shelter officials said.
