Hurricane Nate has made landfall in coastal Louisiana as it continues to lash the northern Gulf Coast.

  • Winds at 85 miles per hour
  • Nate to make second landfall late Saturday evening
  • Florida Peninsula will not be affected by Nate

The latest position has the system about 100 miles south of Biloxi, Mississippi. The storm made landfall this evening at the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana.

Nate is moving to the north at 20 mph with sustained winds of 85 mph. Nate remains a Category 1 hurricane. The central minimum pressure is 982 mb.

Hurricane force winds extend 40 miles from the center, with tropical-storm force winds 125 miles from the center.

On this forecast track, Nate will make landfall somewhere between New Orleans and Mobile in the next few hours. The system could briefly become a Category 2 storm before hitting land.

Hurricane warnings continue for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, including the New Orleans Metropolitan area. Tropical Storm Warnings are also in effect for parts of central Louisiana and the western panhandle of Florida.

Heavy rain, wind, and tornadoes will continue overnight across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi , Alabama and the western Panhandle of Florida.

Storm surge is also a major concern, 1 to 6 feet of surge possible in the western Panhandle. Areas in Mississippi and Louisiana could see 7 to 11 feet of storm surge.

High pressure overhead and a cold front sweeping into the central U.S. will continue to play a role in steering this system.

Aside from a developing system in the open Atlantic to the southwest of the Azores, no tropical formation is expected in the next five days.
