A former caricature artist who stabbed his coworker with a pair of scissors at Islands of Adventure last year, leaving him permanently injured, was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

In August, a jury found Torres guilty of first-degree attempted murder in the New Year's Day 2016 stabbing of coworker Glenn Ferguson. Defense lawyers didn't deny the attack happened but argued Torres didn't plan anything, suddenly snapping when he found out he was fired from his job as a caricature artist.

Before sentencing, Ferguson and his wife were able to address the court. Ferguson told the judge about the pain felt from the stabbing.

“I was scared that my head would explode outward because of the pressure, it was so bad. The pain, the absolute pain,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson now suffers seizures, a speech impediment and post-traumatic stress disorder from being stabbed in the head.

Torres also was given a chance to address the court before sentencing. He spoke for roughly 15 minutes, during which he claimed self-defense and even accused Ferguson of egging him on before the attack.

“I am asking for mercy from the courts, mercy from you, forgiveness from Glenn, even though now he still gives me the death stare. It’s almost like he wants to kill me. He doesn’t seem like he has any forgiveness for me,” said Torres.

Ninth Circuit Court Judge Robert Egan said he thought the decision would be tough, but changed his mind after hearing Torres speak.

"To seem to rationalize the conduct based on an employment dispute,” said Judge Egan. “I am really without words to describe what we heard today but it was said. Under the circumstances the sentence will be life in prison without the possibility of parole."

Torres had faced a possible sentence of eight years to life in prison.

Hand in hand leaving the courthouse, Ferguson and his wife expressed their happiness with the judge’s decision.

“Elated, absolutely elated. I can sleep peacefully now,” said Ferguson. “I hope this helps get a new level of recovery, so I can get better, without the fear that someone is going to try to finish killing me.”
