  • Police say man was malnourished
  • Son charged with neglect

Scott Winkler, 47, was arrested and charged with neglect of an elderly or disabled adult with great harm.

The Apopka Fire Department was called Thursday to a home on South McGee Avenue for an elderly man who was sick.

When emergency responders arrived, they found Jerry Winkler sitting in a chair, covered in feces and urine. Fire officials then contacted police.

The elderly man was taken to a hospital. He appeared malnourished and in pain, an arrest report said. The skin on his legs had also begun to rot.

According to police, the chair was sinking in the center as if someone had been sitting in it for a long period of time. The elderly hadn’t moved from the chair in 16 days.

In an interview with police, Winkler told investigators he brought his father home from the hospital on Oct. 31. Winkler said he was responsible for taking care of his father, including showering and feeding him. Winkler told officers he had not done so because his father was being verbally abusive, the arrest report stated.

Winkler is being held without bond at the Orange County Jail.
