Pups at the Lake County Animal Shelter in Tavares got a Thanksgiving treat Wednesday.

Volunteers cooked four 20-pound turkeys and almost 80 sweet potatoes, then delivered the food to the shelter.

"We decided that if the pets were going to have to be homeless for the holidays, we might as well bring a little bit of home here to the animal shelter," Director Whitney Boylston said.

Organziers said this is the first "Barksgiving" event but hope to continue it each year.
