State Rep. Bob Cortes filed House Bill 987 this week to push for more affordable housing.

He described the bill as a way to provide economical housing for wage earners.

"It's not a bill that is doing public housing sort of speak. It is more for those that can't afford what is being built right now,” said Cortes.

According to the online real estate database, Zillow, the median price for a home currently listed in Orlando is $270,000 dollars.

Cortes said there are other areas where affordable housing can be built, but its things like impact and mobility fees that need to be cut out.

"If you have local government charging around $25,000-30,000 for a home just to build it, it cannot be affordable for somebody that wants to buy a home for 75, 100, 150,000," said Cortes.

The bill has a lot more moving parts, including getting a companion bill in the Senate. Rep. Cortes said that's all in the works and expects it will be talked about in the next legislative session, which starts in early January.

Rep. Cortes will discuss more about this bill on this Sunday's Political Connections.
