Thousands of people in Brevard County are getting into the holiday spirit by collecting donations and toys for children in need.

  • Thousands of people participated in the event

A procession of motorcycles could be seen traveling through the county on Sunday, from the Merritt Island Mall down to the Palm Bay Harley Davidson.

“It’s all about the children, it’s all about the toys, it’s all about giving back to our community," said Robin Bailey with Space Coast Motorcycle Alliance.

Bailey, a long-time member of the Space Coast Motorcycle Alliance, has ridden in the annual toy drive for 20 years.

Riders strapped toys to their motorcycles to donate to local kids in need.

“As this grows the more toys the more people we can get to help,” said Corporal Kyle Mullinaz with Toys for Tots. “Most of these guys don’t just bring one toy, they end up bring three or four."

Toys for Tots is one of five charities in the county these toys will be donated to. Last year, they collected between 8,000 and 10,000 toys and monetary donations.

The group hopes to see those numbers grow this year as they’re seeing an even greater need for locals in the area following Hurricane Irma.

“A lot of people lost everything, from the floods and the rains following the hurricane. We also have an influx of people coming from different areas like Texas and Puerto Rico so we have a lot more children that we need to help," Bailey said.

Organizers estimate 13,000 people attended Sunday’s event.
