A group of people hopped on their bikes Sunday for a good cause: to promote safety.

  • Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow campaign
  • NASCAR drivers participated in bike safety ride
  • Goal is to prevent pedestrian and bicyclist deaths

It was part of the third annual Champions Ride for Bicycle Safety at the Daytona International Speedway.

Bikers included NASCAR's Steve Phelps and drivers such as Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Scott Lagasse, to name a few. They each rode 60 miles.

The event kicked off Alert Today Florida's Every Life Counts 2017 campaign.

The goal is to prevent pedestrian and bicyclist deaths.

"Every life counts and a lot of times you will see someone on a bicycle and it doesn't look like a human and it is," said Scott Lagasse, NASCAR driver. "It could be a mother, a brother, a son, somebodies' someone, so to get that message across and hopefully put your phones down and pay attention and look out ahead."

Bay News 9/News 13 has partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation on its “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” campaign. The idea is to make sure we’re all sharing the road with people who walk or ride their bikes, and everyone makes it where they need to be safely. FDOT has resources for you at alerttodayflorida.com.
