The Trump administration has laid out new guidelines for deporting illegal immigrants living in the U.S.

The guidelines, laid out by the Department of Homeland Security, greatly expands on the number of people considered a deportation priority.

They call for the deportation of anyone in the country illegally if they are convicted, charged or suspected of any crime. That may include misdemeanors like a traffic citation, but the guidelines are not detailed enough to make that distinction.

This is a different form of guidelines under the Obama administration which focused on illegal immigrants who had been convicted of serious crimes.

However, according to government data from Homeland Security, the Obama administration deported more people than any other president's administration in history.

The new guidelines also called to send some immigrants caught illegally crossing the Mexican border back to Mexico, regardless of where they are from.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted his dismay regarding the new guidelines:

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, also responded to the guidelines.

“These memos confirm that the Trump administration is willing to trample on due process, human decency, the well-being of our communities, and even protections for vulnerable children, in pursuit of a hyper-aggressive mass deportation policy. However, President Trump does not have the last word here — the courts and the public will not allow this un-American dream to become reality,” he said.
