The Silver Springs woman who was attacked with an ax that left her brain dead has died, and upgraded charges against her accused attacker are expected this week, officials said Monday.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office did not say when the woman died, but she was in the intensive care unit of a hospital with severe head trauma. She has not been identified.

Deputies were called to a residence in the 500 block of Northeast 129th Terrace on Friday after reports of a domestic disturbance.

When they arrived, they found two women with injuries. The woman who died was unconscious at the time and had severe trauma to her head. The other woman, Brittany Suber, 23 had non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies said 40-year-old Durant Smith came to the house to get some of his personal items and attacked the woman with an ax and a block of wood.

Smith fled the scene before deputies arrived but was later captured.

Smith is currently in the Marion County Jail and faces charges of attempted murder and violation of a domestic violence injunction.
