A rabies alert has been issued for northwest Marion County, officials announced Friday.

The alert, which will remain active for 60 days, is in response to a skunk that tested positive for rabies on Jan. 24.

Areas affected by the alert are: northwest 110th Street to the north, northwest 63rd Street to the south, northwest Highway 225A to the east and northwest 115th Avenue to the west.

Animals with rabies can infect other wild animals or domestic animals that have not be vaccinated.

Animals like raccoons, foxes, bobcats, bats and coyotes can carry rabies.

Officials are urging residents to keep pets under direct supervision so they don’t come in contact with wildlife.

If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance and call the Marion County Animal Services at 352-671-8727.
