Fallen Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton was recognized Thursday during ONYX Magazine's 2nd annual Women on the Move luncheon at The Alfond Inn in Winter Park.

  • News 13's Jackie Brockington also an honoree
  • Event recognizes Florida's influential women of color

Clayton was honored with the Beacon of Light Award. Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill presented and accepted the award on Clayton’s behalf, since Clayton's family was not at the event.

"She was a daughter, she was a sister, a mother, a wife, a friend to all but but she was my girl, my special liaison bridging the gap in the community when it came to 21st century policing," said Hill.

In January, Clayton was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Hill said Clayton's family is still grieving, and also that she's waiting to honor Clayton through the city.

Hill is also currently working on a bill to protect witnesses of murders.

The event recognizes some of Florida's most influential women of color, who are considered trailblazers in their respective fields.

News 13’s own Jackie Brockington was among 30 women who were given awards at the luncheon.

“I’m here today because of my mother, who’s a very strong woman who taught me to look outside of the projects where I grew up on in Brooklyn, New York,” said Brockington. “So, I’m here and I’m honored, but by being here I think I’m honoring my mom.”

Brockington said she hopes to be a role model for her grandchildren and other young people she meets.
