Florida's legislative session is ramping up and more bills are starting to pass the House and Senate.

Here's a look at some of the bills that saw action in Tallahassee Wednesday.

FL House considers $300 million tax cut package

A House panel took a closer look Wednesday at a proposed tax cut package for the coming year.

The plan cuts taxes by $300 million. It includes a reduction in taxes charged on commercial leases and a 10-day sales tax holiday in August for back-to-school shopping.

It also exempts diapers and feminine hygiene products from the state sales tax.

Gov. Scott has requested $600 million in tax cuts.

Fund for charter schools to take over failing schools

Florida's House Speaker wants to create a $200 million emergency grant program that allows private organizations to move into areas with failing schools and open charter schools.

The "Schools for Success" program would use the money to shift students away from public schools with failing grades year after year.

The program is a top priority for House Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Lutz.

Term limits for judges amendment passes House

A Republican attempt to rein in Florida Supreme Court judges passed the Florida House Wednesday.

HJR 1 barely passed 73-46 (it needed 72 votes to pass). The bill would create a constitutional amendment to limit appeals and Florida Supreme Court judges to 12 years on the bench.

Right now, Florida voters can decide whether the  judges should stay on the bench.

House Speaker Richard Corcoran says he wants to stop judges from legislating from the bench. FL Rep. Jennifer Sullivan, R-Mount Dora, says judges need to be more accountable.

But attorneys and Democrats say the term limits discourage qualified people from applying for judgeships. It would also replace benches with people with less experience.

No other state has judicial term limits. The concept has been considered legislative overreach into another branch of government.
