Former FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to some of his FBI friends and colleagues after being fired this week by President Donald Trump.

The letter was Comey’s final word after the shocking news of him being let go.

"I have long believed that a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I'm not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won't either. It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply," Comey stated in his letter.

Democratic U.S. Congressman Steve Cohen of Tennessee shared his thoughts on the letter on Twitter.

Others have chosen more harsh words to talk about this situation. The majority of Republicans have remained either neutral or supportive of the president's decision.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has been quoted as saying he has questions.

While the majority of Democrats have called for an independent investigation, like U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, who stated on Twitter:

Trump responded to the backlash overnight by tweeting a video that highlights all the times Democrats have criticized Comey, saying they should be ashamed. There are at least a dozen clips in the video.
