Two NASA legends will be honored Friday at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

  • Astronauts Ellen Ochoa, Michael Foale will be the latest inductees to hall of fame
  • Ochoa is the first Hispanic woman in space
  • Foale is the first Briton in space

Astronauts Ellen Ochoa and Michael Foale will be the latest inductees into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Ochoa was the first Hispanic woman in space.

The Apollo astronauts who went to the moon inspired Ochoa, but back then women were not allowed to become astronauts.

That changed of course, and in 1990, she was chosen to become an astronaut, flying on four missions on the space shuttle.

Ochoa still works for NASA as the current director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Foale was the first Briton to conduct a spacewalk. Foale, who was born in England, but who has dual American citizenship, was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1987.

He was a crewmember on five space shuttle missions and one Soyuz mission, specializing in long duration stays on both the Mir and International space stations.

He retired from NASA in 2013 and now works to develop green-aviation technology.

The ceremony is set to take place at 1 p.m., Friday.
