Flagler volunteers are urging people to get ready for hurricane season.

Volunteers with Flagler Volunteer Services are working to stuff hundreds of disaster preparedness bags to get ready for their Hurricane Preparedness breakfast event.

  • Volunteerss stuffed disaster preparedness bags
  • Items included first aid kits, blankets and toiletries
  • Hurricane season begins in June

The bags include all sorts of items like glow sticks, first aid kits, blankets, ponchos and toiletries.

Volunteer Bobby Gates said the items could've helped during hurricane Matthew.

"Few items, I never even thought about except for when we started packing them," said Bobby Gates.

For the the last three years Judy Mazzella said volunteers have made the bags for the community to be prepared for hurricanes.

"Thinking what would be immediately necessary if they were stuck in the house or somewhere and just items that they would need," said Judy Mazzella, RSVP project director.

Not only will they give out the bags filled with the toiletries and other necessities but the event is to bring leaders together to talk about storm preparation as well.

"We really just really need to be prepared and learn from what we went through last year," said Mazzella. Learning from Matthew is a great way to go forward, there are lessons learned for everyone involved we want to help the community become more prepared going forward."

Mazzella said this year they're hurricane preparedness event will allow the community to hear state and local officials discuss the impact hurricane Matthew had on each local city.

They will also share information on shelters, evacuation routes, flood zones, and emergency plans.

"People need to be aware and prepared and not think just because it just happened, it's not going to happen again we need to be ready for if something were to happen again," Mazzella said. "It's just to make the the awareness and so that people don't think we got one hurricane we're good for another ten years because that's not the case."

Gates said this will benefit everyone within the community and there's no such thing as being over-prepared.

"Hopefully we don't have to use it but it'll be nice to have the emergency items in there," said Gates.
