School is out for the summer in Brevard County, and police are already issuing tickets to some children out on the streets.

  • West Melbourne Police issues 'tickets' to kids
  • 'Tickets' are citations for good behavior
  • Police officers want to be positive influence on kids

But it's not bad — they are "good" tickets.

The tickets are part of the West Melbourne Police Department's "Commendable Kids" program. The goal is for children to make good choices and interact with officers in a positive way.

On Friday, the three children in the Albert family were "busted" for good behavior as they played basketball.

"(I got a ticket) because I was being good, being nice and having fun," Shyannah Albert said.

Children also get coupons for treats such as smoothies.

"It's great, because we want them to know that we are people, and that we care about them, and whenever there's an issue we can help. Come to us," West Melbourne Officer Graig Erenstoft said.

Officers are required to hand out at least one good "ticket" each shift.
