  • No swimming signs posted at the park

Divers recovered the 17-year-old’s body from a pit at Hardrock Cycle Park in Ocala on Saturday.

Marion County Fire Rescue received a call about a possible drowning at 11 a.m.

When firefighters arrived at the park, they found 10 other teens who said that the 17 year old had gone into the water, but not come out.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Recovery Team was notified. The dive team entered the water and found the teen’s body at 2:15 p.m.

The 100-acre park is open daily for off-road vehicles, like ATVs. Glenn Knox owns the park and said he used to allow swimming, but the pond has been overgrown with hydrilla. He banned swimming about 10 years ago.

Signs posted at the park say there is no swimming or fishing allowed.

"These kids really shouldn't have been here," said Knox. "If they would have came in the front, they would have seen there was no swimming and I would have told them even if I had swimming, you don't want to swim in that pond because it's so weedy. You go in, you're going to stay."

Knox said the teens climbed the fence around the park. He said anyone under the age of 18 is supposed to have a parent with them.

"These kids, they all parked down the road and came in the back way, none of them came in the front," he said.

The teen’s name has not been released, pending notification of his family.

The investigation is ongoing.
