The closely watched Special Congressional election in Georgia and South Carolina is boosting Republican spirits. Both states saw the GOP candidates come out on top, holding onto those Republican seats in the House.
- Georgia's special election was called the most expensive Congressional race in history
- Democratic congressman says Dems' loss should be a 'wake up call'
Democrats were hopeful, but they came up short and could not take the Georgia house seat. This loss means that Democrats are unlikely to turn things around for 2018.
In what is being called the most expensive Congressional race in history, Republican Karen Handel beat Democrat Jon Ossoff with 51.9 percent of the vote to his 48.1 percent.
"I really am honored to be able to stand before you tonight and so extraordinarily humbled. But as everyone knows, most big things are not accomplished by one person alone,β said Karen Handel during her acceptance speech. βAnd I had a tremendous amount of support in this campaign from each and every one of you"
South Carolina's Special election Tuesday night also went to the Republicans. So now, all four special elections in 2017 with Republican seats up for grabs have remained Republican.
The president's son Eric Trump pointed that out in a tweet:
4-0. Kansas (Ron Estes), Montana (Greg Gianforte), South Carolina (Ralph Norman) and now Georgia (Karen Handel). #MAGA πΊπΈπΊπΈπΊπΈ https://t.co/Oq8LX9odsh

Something President Donald Trump is clearly very proud of. He posted on his Twitter page:
Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th. Fantastic job, we are all very proud of you!

But Democrats said they at least gave Republicans a run for their money. Osoff tweeted:
We showed the world that in places no one even thought it was possible to fight, we can fight. And we will fight.

Other Democrats are not so optimistic. Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton said in a tweet:
#Ossof Race better be a wake up call for Democrats β business as usual isn't working. Time to stop rehashing 2016 and talk about the future.
