Some bars in Raleigh, North Carolina are adding new ID scanning technology in hopes of preventing underage drinking.

  •  Bars like Hibernian Hospitality are using the new technology
  •  Owners say it stops fake IDs as well as those that don't belong to the person using it
  •  Many believe this is making bars safer

The scanners take real time pictures of you while your ID is being scanned so the bouncer knows it's you.

Bar owners say this way it stops fake IDs from getting through as well as real IDs that don't belong to the person trying to use it.

The Hibernian Hospitality owner said part of the reason for the systems are fake IDs coming from abroad are so well done and easily accessible -- it's hard to tell the real ones from counterfeit.

He also says some people may have a real ID, but it might not be theirs, and rather a family member’s.

"It uses facial recognition so the person stands in front, looks at it, looks at the camera and then the computer matches it with the ID that's there,” said Niall Hanley, owner of Hibernian Hospitality.

The system from Patron Scan then tells the bouncer if it's the same person and if the ID is real.

As technology improves for making fakes, the program has software updates to weed out the most current fraudulent ID.

Some believe this is a good step in making bars safer.

"I've never seen that scanner yet. But I mean if it's for security purpose and to make sure whatever ID you're showing is you I think it's a good idea especially with a lot of kids trying to get fake IDs now a days and get drunk. Probably safer now,” said Morrisville resident Manny Amaya.

Hanley says it's definitely been helping to catch people with fake IDs.

"It's a great system; it's nearly at a 100 percent accuracy when detecting fakes.”
