Troopers are looking for the driver of a car they say ran head-on into a moped and drove off Wednesday night, resulting in the death of one of the two riders.

  • FHP: Kia Soul struck moped, drove off Wednesday night
  • Moped riders fell, then driver was struck and killed by 3rd vehicle
  • 18-year-old moped passenger incurred broken bones

The fatal hit-and-run happened at County Road 437 at Central Avenue in Sorrento.

Surveillance video released Thursday by the Florida Highway Patrol shows what they say is a white 2009 to 2014 Kia Soul pull out from a side street.

We will find this vehicle now that we know what it is, our analyst will do a grid search for this vehicle in that area,” said Sgt. Kim Montes, Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said that driver pulled in front of a moped, striking it head-on, and left the riders for dead.

“Just unfortunately another fatal hit and run crash, FHP here in Central Florida, this is our 18th fatal hit and run crash this year. This is the fourth one in Lake County,” said Sgt. Montes.

Patrick Burns, 26, and 18-year-old Alexandria Swisher were on the moped. After the initial crash, a third vehicle hit and killed Burns. Swisher incurred a broken arm and collar bone.

“Now that we know what kind of vehicle we are looking for, somebody out there knows where this vehicle is," the FHP's Sgt. Kim Montes said. "You... can call Crimeline and remain anonymous if you don’t want to get involved but want to help out this family who now wants answers as to why person didn’t stay.”

Troopers say the driver of the Kia will face a first-degree felony for leaving the scene of the accident, which carries a minimum of four years in prison.

If you know who the Kia driver is, you're urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
