A flash flood in Arizona has claimed the lives of nine family members, including several children as they were enjoying an outing.

  • 6 children are among those who died
  • 27-year-old man missing

The Gila County Sheriff's Department in Arizona says a family of about 14 people were spending time in a swimming hole just north of Phoenix on Saturday afternoon when heavy rains swept them away.

At least nine of those family members are confirmed dead, including six children between the ages of 2 and 13, along with a person in their late 60s.

Another family member, a 27-year old man, is still missing.

Four family members were pulled from the raging water and taken to the hospital with hypothermia.

More flash flooding in that area is expected today.

Authorities are warning people to stay clear of waterways and not to drive through flooded streets.
