The jury recommended the death penalty Tuesday for a St. Cloud man found guilty of killing his 3-month-old son.

On Tuesday, the jury only deliberated for about four hours before reaching the unanimous verdict.

Larry Perry could not bring himself to look up as the recommendation that he be sentenced to death was read in court.

However, afterwards Perry looked straight into our camera, and delivered a message for his child's mother.

“I’ll always love you, Cathy," said Perry as he walked out of the courtroom before being handcuffed.

State Attorney Brad King, who was reassigned this case by Governor Rick Scott from State Attorney Aramis Ayala, said this death penalty trial was never about what he wanted.

“I don’t think about it as what I want. This is doing our best to follow the law, to follow the rules that are laid out and this was just a very. very sad case. It was one the saddest cases that I’ve been a part of," explained King.

“Well, it wasn’t totally unexpected, I’ll say that," said attorney Ed Mills, who is serving as Larry Perry's defense attorney.

Mills said he is still focused on making sure his client does not receive the death penalty.

“What we have scheduled in October is a Spencer Hearing, and that is another opportunity to convince Judge (Jon B.) Morgan that death is not an appropriate sentence in this case. We will be working on that between now and October," Mills shared.

Meanwhile King is seemingly satisfied with the jury's recommendation.

“I think the jury took a lot of time and effort into making their decision and I respect their decision," King answered.

Prosecutors said Perry killed his child by throwing him against the wall, twisting his neck and stomping on his face.

Although the jury recommended death, Judge Jon B. Morgan will ultimately decide if Perry will be sentenced to death.

Perry will be back in court on Oct 13. His sentencing will be scheduled some time after that.
