The mayor of Kissimmee has signed a pact to continue fighting climate change in the country despite President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

  • There's no cost involved, Mayor Jose Alvarez said

Commissioners voted 3-2 to have Mayor Jose Alvarez join the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda. Alvarez said there is no cost involved and that the city of Kissimmee has done a lot when it comes to conserving green energy.

The city hopes to continue those efforts.

The city of Kissimmee has hybrid garbage trucks and electrical parking meters. In the last meeting, the Kissimmee City Commission approved funding for new energy-efficient windows in the police department.

"This is just a message — a positive message to our constituents — that we will continue to work toward clean energy and also a message to high-tech, green energy companies that we're open and we want them to come to our city," Alvarez said.

The mayor is getting criticism over the decision, though.

Dozens of residents have taken to social media in opposition of the move. One post reads as follows: "Have they seen the horrible conditions around the community? This is their top priority? Ridiculous."
