Two Volusia County deputies shoot a suspect following multiple carjackings Tuesday afternoon.

  • Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigating series of carjackings
  • Carjacking suspect was shot by a Volusia County deputy
  • Suspect condition unknown; no deputies were injuries

The scene ended near the intersection of Williamson Boulevard and Bellevue Avenue in Daytona Beach.

The sheriff's office said the incident started as a domestic violence call between the suspect and his boyfriend at a Discount Market in DeLand around 4:02 p.m. Tuesday.

The carjacking victim was dragged by his own vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect then crashed the vehicle, and when that happened, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said a good Samaritan got out of his vehicle to help the victim.

“The owner of a red Saturn, pulls up as a good Samaritan to give help, the bad guy then jumps into his car and takes off," said Sheriff Chitwood.

The suspect hit stop sticks near Daytona Beach, but reached the area of 2500 block of Bellevue Avenue, where he carjacked another vehicle.

Responding deputies encountered the suspect operating the final carjacked vehicle on Bellevue Avenue at about 4:22 p.m.

Chitwood said two deputies were near the vehicle when the suspect started driving toward them.

“From looking at the body camera video, if he doesn’t put the vehicle in drive, and try to come out of there at them, he doesn’t get shot," said Chitwood.

That's when two deputies fired on the truck, shooting around 10 times.

The suspect was hit four times -- once in the neck, once in the shoulder, once in the arm and then in the leg. He went through surgery and remains alive at Halifax Hospital.

Deputies involved weren't injured, the Sheriff's Office said.

At this point the names of the suspect and the deputies are being withheld.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
