Family, friends and fellow Orange County deputies gathered today to remember Deputy 1st Class Norman Lewis, who died during the manhunt for Markeith Loyd.

“I worked with him for ever since he’s been with the sheriff’s office. Also when he played for UCF I watched him play football,” said Manny McDuffie, a friend of Lewis.

Those were the good times. In January, Lewis died in a traffic crash as the manhunt for accused cop killer Markeith Loyd pressed on throughout Orange County. Sheriff Jerry Demings says he was proud to see so many people turn out to pay tribute to Lewis.

“It is certainly a good day, a great day because you are here from our youngest to our oldest to pay tribute to one of our fallen heroes,” Demings said.

The county dedicated a portion of Pine Hills Road, close to the accident scene, naming it "Deputy First Class Norman Lewis Memorial Highway."

Lewis’ mother attended the service and thanked everyone for the honor and telling the crowd her faith has helped her cope with her son’s death.

“So I’m here as a mother to say it wasn’t easy. It never will be easy but you know what? Life goes on,” Norma Lewis said.

On Monday morning, Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton, who was allegedly shot and killed by Loyd in January, was honored by having a road named after her as well.
