Flooding and other devastation from Harvey has displaced thousands of people across Texas. It's a situation that Texas will be dealing with for years, according to FEMA director Brock Long.

Groups nationwide are mounting efforts to collect donations and organize volunteer efforts to deliver aid where it is needed most. 

As always, before you donate, be sure to research any group before you give money or other donations. Also, groups with strong local ties to the community are sometimes the best place to donate.

Check out the organizations listed below for details on how to help.

  • American Red Cross — The Red Cross already has thousands of volunteers on the ground helping victims. The group has shelters open, and opened a Mental Health Line for help people cope. 
  • Heart to Heart International — A nonprofit providing mobile medical help in Texas.
  • Southern Baptist Relief — Provides various aspects of disaster relief, from hot meals to child care and eventually to structure repairs and other post-storm needs.
  • All Hands Volunteers — The group leverages volunteers to help with disaster relief and already has a team in Texas. 
  • Global Giving — A charity crowdfunding site that sends the money to local relief efforts. the money will initially got help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs. 
  • Samaritan's Purse — The charity will be helping once the flood recedes with both counseling and assistance in clean up for homeowners.
  • Americares — Nonprofit that helps with medical care and basic supplies.
  • GoFundMe — The crowdfunding site is highlighting Harvey relief fundraisers in one spot so you can find a group to help.
  • United Way of Greater Houston — The Houston chapter has set up a relief fund to help people in the aftermath of Harvey.
  • Habitat for Humanity — Habitat for Humanity will be working on shelter and housing needs caused by the storm.
  • San Antonio Food Bank — The food bank is handling emergency meals for many evacuees. 
  • Habitat for Horses — a Texas-based charity that helps rescue horses, and is working to rescue horses in need now.

The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster is offering several ways people can help — including donating money, donating supplies and even volunteering. Head to the NVOAD website.

Local groups across Texas are taking in thousands of displaced pets. These organizations need monetary help. Since these groups are out of the immediate area, they also benefit from in-kind donations. You can actually go to Amazon.com, buy something off their wish lists and have it shipped to them. 

Nationally, the American Humane Association is helping with animal rescue and transport (not just pets, but livestock as well), and can always use donations.
