It's hard to imagine a roadway as busy as Colonial Drive close to both UCF and the Waterford Lakes Shopping Center without lighting. However, that is exactly what we found.

"It just creates a dangerous situation for everyone involved,” said Aaron Walkup, who frequents Colonial Drive. “If the state doesn't address it, I'm sure there's going to be more accidents and more pedestrian fatalities and things that could have been avoided if we don't address this issue now."

We met with Walkup, who doesn't actually live off of Colonial Drive — he lives in Winter Park, but he recently drove through here at night and wasn't thrilled.

"Commuting home from a friend's house, it had just become dark. And I was just concerned with the lack of lighting here, the amount of motorists, pedestrians and the first responders that have to work this area," Walkup said.

Spectrum News 13 checked in this week with the Florida Department of Transportation, who addressed the lighting concern.

"There is a lighting upgrade planned for the intersection with Rouse Road and State Road 50.  It is in the design phase now and construction is funded with an estimated letting date in February 2018," said FDOT.

That may be just the beginning, as FDOT said that more lighting projects as part of a district-wide pedestrian safety initiative between Rouse Road and Alafaya Trail may be on the way soon.

Thanks for your question, Aaron!
