  • Police say the man charged at them
  • He was taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. at the Bristol Bay Apartments on Banana Cay Drive.

A woman called 911 and told dispatchers that her boyfriend was trying to commit suicide by taking pills.

The woman also told police the man said he wanted to commit “suicide by cop.”

When officers arrived at the apartment, the man charged at them with a knife, according to Police Chief Ronald Wright. One officer attempted to use a Taser gun on the man. When that didn't stop the man, another officer shot then shot him in the hip.

The man was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Dayton Beach. His injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

The officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
