Over the past few years as the airport has grown, so has their ability to address security concerns.

On Monday, leadership at the Orlando International Airport invited us to a closed door meeting to talk to security directors with the Orlando Police and Fire Departments FBI, TSA, FAA and NTSB about how they are working together to streamline communication here at MCO.

“Everybody on their phones want the information right away,” said the Senior Director of Airport Operations Tom Draper.

With a record breaking 83,500 passengers passing through the Orlando International Airport this past Saturday alone, airport authorities say they have their hands full.

Spectrum News 13 got a behind the scenes look at the communication process and learned more about how the airport plans on expanding their staff as the airport — twice the size of the City of Winter Park — continues to grow, investing $3.5million in construction with the build of a new terminal.

“During any type of event, the first thing out there is life safety,” Draper said.

Officials said with situations like the Pulse nightclub shooting and Fort Lauderdale shooting, their teams are preparing for anything.

“We continue to look at our budget cycles and adding additional staff, and adding additional equipment, and we focus on the training aspect and the exercise aspect.” Draper explained.

Although airport officials couldn’t go into details over what new methods their security team, they did say they’ve added new fire engines, and the TSA has implemented technology to better address any and all security concerns.
