A Satellite Beach music teacher is picking up the pieces Friday after a devastating fire tore through her home early Thursday morning.

  • "Miss G" taught piano to many in the community
  • Escaped but lost belongings, including extensive memorabilia

It was a home where a well-known music teacher known as "Miss G" opened her doors to spread the gift of music for decades.

Scores of children have come to this home to get piano lessons from Miss G. But around 2 a.m. Thursday at her home on Jamaica Boulevard, a fire broke out.

The fire destroyed nearly everything Miss G owns, including a priceless collection.

"I told them there was a fire at Miss G's, and it's pretty much gone," says Jennifer Jones, who had to reluctantly tell her 11 and 9-year-old girls Grace and Caroline that the place they've taken piano lessons for years was destroyed by a fire.

"My kids wanted to know right away, 'are we ever going to play piano with Miss. G again?'" Jones said. "She is kind of an icon of Satellite Beach — everybody knows her."

Jones said word of the fire at Miss G’s house has rippled through this tight-knit beach-side community.

"I would tell her we love her and hope she's OK," said Grace, her student.

Jones said Miss G got out safety, but lost everything: her piano, music books, plus an extensive collection of Michael Jackson and Elton John albums and memorabilia.

"Her passion was in there," Jones said.

Three cats in the home are reportedly being treated at a local veterinarian. The other is thought to be somewhere on the property.

"That's like the only thing she has left," Grace said.

Before this fire, Hurricane Irma also impacted the home, toppling a large tree onto the roof, causing extensive damage.

But after this, there's nothing left.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, authorities say.
