Messaging and email service for BlackBerry users across the globe has been sporadic for days, and now the outage appears to be affecting customers in North America.

The outage has already affected millions of users in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa for three days.

According to CNN, reports Wednesday morning suggested the problems have spread to to some BlackBerry users in the U.S. and Canada.

Research In Motion Ltd., the Canadian company that makes the phones, said Tuesday that a crucial link in its infrastructure had failed, and a backup didn't work either. RIM said it was now working to get through a backlog of traffic.

Twitter users in the U.S. and Canada have begun reporting reporting service outages as well.

Unlike other cell phone makers, RIM handles email and messaging traffic to and from its phones. When it encounters a problem, millions of subscribers are affected at once.
