The largest sporting event in Central Florida is here.

  • People from around the world have traveled to compete in marathon
  • Walt Disney World Marathon expected to bring millions of dollars to the local economy

An estimated 100,000 people are in the area this weekend for the Walt Disney World Marathon.

Right after the holidays, this would otherwise be a slow tourism time for Central Florida. However, Disney changed that with this event, drawing thousands of runners and spectators to the area, pouring tens of millions of dollars into the economy.

The marathon weekend includes the 5k, the 10k, the half marathon and the full marathon over the next four days.

Some runners will compete in all of the races, in what’s called the Dopey Challenge.

“It’s a fun race. It’s a race where you can totally have fun, unlike other races where you are very serious and you’re just trying to exert so much effort, but here’s all about having fun,” said Gerard Reyes, who traveled from the Philippines to compete in the Dopey Challenge.

Sunday’s full marathon, with 22,000 runners, is one of the largest races in the country.
