Zykira Lewis is a tough player on the court and it’s tough to get her off it.  Her Bartow High School teammate Shanti Groover is right by her side.

“We’re real close,” Lewis said.  “We look out for each other making sure nothing don’t happen to each other.”

They are Polk County’s version of “Batman and Robin”.

“She brings energy.  She blocks shots and defense,” said Lewis, the self-proclaimed Batman, of her sidekick Groover.

Groover returned the favor by adding, “I love playing with Zy because when she drives to the basket she looks for the dish off.  We have good chemistry when we’re on the floor together.”

Lewis is a sharp shooting guard for the Yellow Jackets and is among one of the leading scorers in the county, bringing in 17 points and adding 4 steals a game.  The UCF commit teams up with Groover during the summer as well on the Central Florida Elite 17U team.

“I think my game came a long way because doing our two-a-days with our Bartow team and then coming with Central Florida four days a week, working them.  So it all ties in together as one.”

The two will play a grueling schedule on the AAU circuit this summer.  And while it takes away much of their free time as teenagers, the Bartow duo is benefitting from the exposure.   Lewis used her platform to get noticed by UCF head coach Joi Williams.

“I always wanted to go to UCF.  I had a big poster on my wall and when she offered me I was real excited so I committed.  That’s where I’ve always wanted to go.”

What’s not to like about the 5-foot-6 guard, she’s an athletic jump shooter who has the potential to start in the knights backcourt in the 2013-2014 season.

“I’m just trying to bring energy to the team, intensity and help develop it since we’re going to the Big East.”
