Tampa Bay Tech wide receiver Richard Benjamin is re-opening his recruitment.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver is decommitting from UCF, and will explore other college options, head coach Jayson Roberts confirmed to BHSN.

“Really, from talking to Rich, I think he kind of feels like he may have rushed into his decision," Roberts said. "In light of the sanctions that came down on UCF, he isn’t 100 percent sure what the program is going to be like when he gets there. He is opening it (his recruitment) up to weigh his options to see what else is out there.”

Roberts said Benjamin did not say whether or not UCF will still be considered.

The UCF football team was placed on a one-year postseason ban due to major recruiting violations on July 31. They are appealing those sanctions.

Benjamin, however, said the fact the Knights are on probation did not impact his decision.

"It wasn't really anything about UCF," Benjamin said. "I just really wanted to open up my recruitment and evaluate things. I just really wanted to look over my recruitment. There really wasn't anything about UCF or anything like that, I just wanted to look things over.

"That (the sanctions) didn't effect my decision, no."

In an exclusive interview with BHSN on July 9, Benjamin made his commitment to the Knights. You can watch that interview here.

In the interview, Benjamin said UCF was his final destination: "This is my final choice. Yes sir (I'm a UCF Knight)."

Despite opening up his recruitment, Benjamin doesn't feel he made too quick of a decision.

"I don't think I rushed or anything, I don't really know about that," Benjamin said. "I don't feel like I was rushed or pressured, it was just too much at one time. Now I can just sit back, reevaluate everything, take my time and go through the process."

Since his commitment, Benjamin told BHSN he had been contacted by numerous schools, including Purdue, Miami, Florida, Louisville, Texas A&M and West Virginia.

Bay-area players QB Pete DiNovo (East Lake), OL Aaron Evans (Armwood) and DB twins Shaquem and Shaquill Griffin (Lakewood) are committed to the Knights.

DiNovo said his commitment is still solid.

"Yes, I'm 100 percent committed still," he said via text. "I haven't got a chance to talk to Rich yet, my phone has been blowing up."

Benjamin said he had been contemplating the decision to decommit for a couple of days, and sought out advice from his coaches.

"I was just talking to some of my coaches that are like fathers to me and getting the feedback from them," Benjamin said. "I was asking them questions and asking people who went through the process and going on the basis of that. It wasn't really anything about UCF."
