Gibbs will now be on the lookout for a new head coach.

Antonio Knox, the team's head coach the past three seasons, is stepping down to tend to some family issues, the school confirmed to BHSN. Knox took over for Donnie Abraham prior to the 2010 season, and led the Gladiators to back-to-back 3-7 seasons in 2011 and 2012.

"We want the absolute best for him as he moves on in the next phase of his life," Athletic Director Javan Turner said. "The next phase of Gibbs high school is finding the next person that's going to build the Gibbs high school football program."

Phone calls to Knox by BHSN have not yet been returned.

Gibbs last made the postseason in 2009, a 52-15 loss to Manatee, which was also the last time the team finished a season above .500. The school is looking to hire a coach that can help turn the program around. They've had four head coaches since 2006.

"It's important for us to define the person that's going to coach a total program," Turner said. "We're looking for the next person that's going to be here for a while to build a quality program that supports the students in and outside the classroom, and can teach them to be life-long learners."

The position has already been posted, and Turner said the program hopes to have a coach in place by the end of February.

"We will look through them all (resumes), and hopefully, we will find the best candidate," Turner said. "We're going to look for a person that has the capability to run not just a team, but a program ... we're looking for the best person."
