To anyone who has ever come in contact with Gerry Ramsberger, they'll tell you that you couldn't find a better man.

I got to know him when he ran the Tampa Bay Rays' press box for the first 10 years of the franchise's exsistence.

This Friday at 4 p.m., the baseball fields at Boca Ciega High School will be renamed the Gerry Ramsberger Fields.

See, Gerry is a legend in St. Pete athletic circles. He coached and taught at Boca Ciega from 1956-68. He was also a teacher and coach in the first faculty at Northeast High School.

Gerry graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor's and master's degree. He served in the European Theatre with the 293 Combat Engr. Bn., American 3rd Army 6 and has garnered all five of the European Battle Stars. While in the military, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

I just know him as a warm, caring lovable guy. Boca Ciega is making a great move.

Former players and students of Gerry's are encouraged to come out Friday to the dedication ceremony.
