And then there were 10.

The second round of the playoffs marked the end of the postseason for several local teams. But for 10 Tampa Bay area teams, the journey continues and the dreams of a state championship remain alive.

Class 8A Region Final

Manatee Hurricanes (11-1) at Dr. Phillips Panthers (12-0): This is the BHSN Central Florida Game of the Week, pitting the Hurricanes, winners of 11 straight, against the undefeated Panthers. Thanks to junior running back Johnnie Lang, Manatee averages more than 200 yards rushing per game. But they are facing a Dr. Phillips defense that limited Plant to 50 yards of offense in their regional semifinal victory.

Class 7A Region Final

Tampa Bay Tech Titans (7-5) at Kissimmee Osceola Kowboys (11-1): The Titans shocked Sickles, a state semifinalist last year, in the regional semifinals. But anyone that has watched Tech this season knows when Deon Cain is on, there’s very few teams that can stop the Titans. Cain has accounted for more than 700 yards off offense and eight TDs in two playoff games.

Fort Myers Green Wave (12-0) at East Lake Eagles (12-0): The two undefeated teams are quite similar. Fort Myers averages 43 points per game while allowing an average of 12 points. East Lake counters with an offense that averages 36 points per game and a defense allowing an average of only 11 points.

Class 6A Region Final

Gainesville Hurricanes (7-5) at Armwood Hawks (13-0): You again? These two teams are quite familiar with each other. Gainesville defeated Armwood the past two seasons enroute to the state title game, while Armwood defeated Gainesville in 2011 enroute to the 6A title, which was later vacated. Per usual with the Hawks, the defense drives the team, allowing only four points per game. Armwood’s offense can’t be ignored. They average nearly 300 yards per game.

Class 5A Region Final

Lakewood Spartans (9-3) at Suwannee Bulldogs (12-1): It’s been a wild ride for the Spartans this season, but they find themselves in a familiar spot, deep in the playoffs. Last year, Lakewood was a win away from Orlando. That loss in the state semifinals has been a motivating factor this season. Quarterback Ryan Davis accounts for 3,233 of the Spartans 5,022 yards of offense. Davis is on pace to set the new Pinellas County passing record.

Jesuit Tigers (8-4) at Bishop Moore Hornets (12-0): The cardiac cats have made a habit of dramatic come-from-behind victories in the postseason and in this round, Jesuit gets a familiar opponent. Bishop Moore defeated the Tigers earlier in the season, 25-17. But Jesuit was without their leading rusher Malik Davis, who averages 159 rushing yards per game.

Class 3A State Semifinal

Lakeland Christian Vikings (11-1) at Jacksonville Trinity Christian Conquerors (9-2): Lakeland Christian check list – first district title in school history, check. First playoff victories in school history, check, check. The Vikings are enjoying a historic playoff run. Unfortunately, that run has led them directly to the defending state champs.

American Heritage Stallions (10-1) at Clearwater Central Catholic Marauders (11-1): The Marauders seemed primed for a return visit to the state championship game. But then their top player Jeff Smith went down with a serious leg injury in CCC’s regional final victory over Cardinal Mooney. With Smith likely out with an ankle sprain, the Marauders will need sophomore Jakob Parks to step up big.

Class 2A State Semifinal

North Florida Christian Eagles (7-4) at Victory Christian Storm (10-1): The Storm poured on the points in the fourth quarter (21 points) in their 41-34 regional championship victory over Warner Christian. Coach Tommie Lewis has his Victory Christian team poised for their second-consecutive trip to the title game.

Indian Rocks Christian Golden Eagles (11-0) at Glades Day Gators (11-2): The Golden Eagles have rolled through their schedule this season, outscoring opponents an average of 37 points per game. Glades Day won’t be a team that will roll over. The Gators have shutout their opponents seven times this season, including back-to-back playoff game shutout victories.
