Miguel Menendez is the new Jesuit baseball coach, the school announced on Thursday.

Menendez replaces Richie Warren, the Jesuit alum who led the Tigers to a Class 5A state championship two months ago. Warren left the program to become Berkeley Prep's new baseball coach.

A University of Tampa alum, Menendez has spent the past 14 seasons at Key West High School and head coach of the baseball team since 2006.

“We are extremely excited to have Coach Menendez taking the helm of the Jesuit baseball program and joining our faculty,’’ Jesuit athletic director Terry Rupp said. “He has the talent, experience, and character to lead our baseball program and our students in fulfilling the mission of Jesuit High School.’’

As a player at Key West, Menendez helped the Conchs win one of its state-record 11 baseball state championships in 1995, graduating as the school’s career hits leader. He was All-Conference for UT’s 1998 Division II national champions, playing catcher and first base.

“This opportunity is extraordinary,’’ Menendez said. “Jesuit High School represents the best in academics and athletics, and I’m honored to become part of such a rich tradition of excellence. I look forward to joining the faculty, and the whole Jesuit family, and continuing the great success.”
