What goes into making an elite athlete?

Is it genetics? Is it more training? Is it specializing in a sport at a younger age?

So much goes into the development of an elite athlete that sometimes parents, coaches and even the athlete can lose focus and suddenly find themselves out of sports completely. That's why Dr. Koco Eaton, the Tampa Bay Rays orthopedic surgeon, and other Bay Area doctors stepped up to provide an all-purpose event to educate.

Dr. Eaton recently hosted the fourth-annual BayCare sports medicine conference titled "Keeping Young Athletes in the Game." Throughout the day, various doctors and experts led seminars on a variety of subjects, including nutrition for young athletes, preventing overuse injuries in youth sports and the hidden threats of concussions in young athletes.

Sports Illustrated senior writer David Epstein, author of the bestseller "The Sports Gene," was the guest speaker.
