Class 6A State Semifinals

-Gainesville 83 Edgewater 71 OT

After starting the season 1-3 including a 40-point loss to Dr. Phillips, the Eagles have reeled off 18 consecutive victories to earn a trip to the Lakeland Center. Edgewater narrowly defeated Winter Haven 64-63 in the region semifinals before getting past Deltona 61-54 in the region final. Sophomore Anthony Simons averages 18 points and 4.6 assists per game while FAMU signee Francois Lewis puts up 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The winner will face either Tampa Jefferson or three-time defending state champ Miami Norland in Saturday’s title game.

-Miami Norland 67 Jefferson 43

Jefferson: The Dragons began the postseason with a district tournament victory, a first for the school since 1978. But nothing was as dramatic as their last second win in the regional finals. Down by two with four seconds remaining in the game, Vernon Jackson dished an inbound pass to Maurice Moore who made a layup at the buzzer. That basket sent Jefferson to the Final Four.

Class 7A State Semifinals

-Blanche Ely 91 North Port 59

-Osceola (Kissimmee) 67 Oviedo 55

It’s an all-Central Florida matchup in 7A between the defending champion Lions (25-5) and Kowboys (25-5). Oviedo coach Ed Kershner is the state leader in career victories with 863 and Osceola’s last appearance at the state tournament came in 1983 when Kershner was the Kowboys boss. Osceola upset both Lakeland and Bartow during regionals and topped East Bay in overtime to advance to the state semifinals. Oviedo has won 11 straight since dropping a game to district foe Wekiva on Jan. 14. The Lions have three starters back from last year’s state championship team, including Boston College signee Matt Milon.
