It's only mid-March, but Tampa Catholic was in must-win mode to stay alive in the 4A District 10 race in a showdown with Berkeley Prep. Senior pitcher Reeves Martin dominated for the Crusaders, throwing six innings of one-hit ball, as Tampa Catholic snapped a five-game losing streak to the Buccaneers.

Martin earned Player of the Game honors with his six-strikeout performance. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, when Berkeley Prep's Danny Brackman broke up the perfect game. A.J. Chacon struck out two Buccaneers in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Crusaders coach Ty Griffin said before the game his team needed to play small ball to win. They did just that, taking advantage of Berkeley Prep errors and hit batsmen to take a 3-0 lead through three innings. Josh Russo had the best-hit ball of the night on an RBI double to the wall in the bottom of the third.

Berkeley Prep (4-7, 1-1) will look to bounce back on Friday in another district game, in their first meeting of the season with Sarasota Booker (5-5, 0-0). The Crusaders (4-6, 1-1) are off until Tuesday, when they'll also face Booker.
