It was a battle of wills.

Who would break first?

Unfortunately for Boca Ciega, they did.

The Pirates lost 4-0 to American Heritage in the Class 5A state softball semifinals. The Patriots will play Baker County for the title LIVE on BHSN Channel 47/HD 1147 Thursday at 7 p.m.

Boca Ciega appeared more than just happy to be at the state tournament. They looked like they belonged, going toe-to-toe with the defending state champs.

With sophomore pitcher Caylie Van Auken on the mound, the Pirates held strong for the first two innings, retiring seven of the first eight batters they faced. Then American Heritage broke open the game with Jenna Goodrich's grand slam to put the Patriots up 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Van Auken settled down after that. But there was no give from American Heritage.

In five innings of action, Patriots junior pitcher Madison Crosby allowed only two hits. Goodrich entered in relief and didn't give up any.

With Boca Ciega down to their final three outs, Goodrich struck out the side to end the game.
